Abstract

This article addresses the linguistic meanings of spirituality in old age and their relationships with the health and quality of life of elderly people. Spirituality, understood
as a subjective dimension related to life’s meaning, transcendence, and connection with oneself, others, and the sacred, has been widely discussed in the context of aging. In old age, spiritual experiences often appear associated with coping with losses, emotional strengthening, and the re-signification of existence. The study presents reflections on how the discourses and narratives of older adults reveal meanings attributed to spirituality, directly influencing psychological, emotional, and social aspects. Furthermore, the relationship between spirituality, mental health, and quality of life is discussed, highlighting its potential as a coping strategy in the face of the frailties inherent to aging. This is a bibliographic study grounded in authors from psychology, gerontology, and spirituality studies. It is concluded that spirituality can contribute significantly to the integral well-being of the elderly, promoting feelings of hope, belonging, and subjective strengthening.
